Program Details
Students completing this certificate will be well-prepared to compete for jobs in clinical research or apply to graduate school while also contributing meaningfully to advancing medical and health-related knowledge.

Curriculum Requirements
Only Pitt undergraduates pursuing a degree are eligible to enroll in this certificate program, which requires 18 credits to complete.
Grade Requirements
A minimum grade of C is needed in each course required for this certificate.
Satisfactory/No Credit Option
No course that counts toward the certificate can be taken on an S/NC basis, unless the student has received special permission from the certificate advisor.
- CLRES 1000: Clinical Research Methods (3 credits)
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of clinical research, such as the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of clinical research studies. Topics include an introduction to clinical research, observational and experimental study design, and bias and confounding. Through a combination of didactics, case studies, and practical exercises, students will gain skills necessary to critically evaluate clinical research literature and participate in future clinical research projects.
- CLRES 1010: Clinical Research Management (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to the Good Clinical Practice framework, including responsibilities in designing, conducting, monitoring, documenting, and reporting clinical research studies. Topics will include federal regulations; study monitoring and audits; Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) roles, responsibilities, and regulations; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); database structures, data collection, and effective presentation of data in required reports and forms.
- CLRES 1040: Scientific Communication Skills (3 credits)
Students in this course will develop excellent scientific writing and presentation skills. Students will learn to write effectively, producing a variety of scientific products such as a research manual, IRB protocol, and scientific abstract. Students will be expected to practice specific skills in individual and small-group projects.
- CLRES 1050: Ethics and Responsible Conduct of Research (3 credits)
This course introduces students to fundamental ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice; ethical issues arising from clinical research such as informed consent, vulnerable populations, using animals for research, and using placebos; conflicts of interest; data fabrication; authorship; and protection of human subjects. Students will complete CITI training modules as part of this course.
- CLRES 1200 Clinical Research Synthesis and Application (3 credits)
Students in this course will obtain practical experience in clinical research through observing clinical research, shadowing clinical research teams, or gaining other hands-on clinical research experience. Students may create a clinical research study protocol, a clinical research data collection system, or other clinical research project. This course will culminate in a scientific poster session, where all students will present their projects.
