BUILD-UP was designed to support trainees with different interprofessional backgrounds interested in clinically-relevant human research. The program accepts PhDs, MDs, and doctorally prepared clinicians across disciplines (e.g., DPT, DNP).

• Once enrolled, BUILD-UP fellows will:
• Receive mentorship on a longitudinal research project by experts in the field from the University of Pittsburgh and The Ohio State University, both hubs for research at the intersection of substance use and pain.
• Come together in-person for annual retreats, national conferences, and short-term research experiences.
• Participate in a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum based on core clinical and translational science competencies on substance use and pain topics
• Have the option to complete a Master’s of Science in Clinical Research

Each BUILD-UP fellow may have financial support to:

• attend in-person annual reatreats and/or to travel to pain and substance use-related conferences at which they are presenting
• complete a research Master’s degree if desired (may require in-person course attendance)
• complete research and relevant training related to their main BUILD-UP project.

Funding is also available on a limited basis for health insurance and child care, per NIH training funding guidelines.
