Dr. South-Paul is Professor and Chair Emeritus, UPitt Department of Family Medicine. She joined Meharry Medical College as Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer in December 2021. She has chaired the Advisory Committee for the AAMC Minority Faculty Leadership Seminars for more than 10 years. She also chaired the Physician Inclusion Council for the UPItt and UPMC (PICUP) until December 2019 and is an experienced mentor and institutional leader committed to advancing diverse faculty in academic medicine. In that role she implemented a research mentoring program for junior faculty, built programs to manage conflicts related to diversity within individual business units, and has been a faculty in the ICRE at UPitt, including the PROMISED program. She also developed a 2-month Cultural Competence training program for master’s students in the ICRE, which she has run for the past 10 years, and a similar program for 4th year medical students. Prior to joining UPitt, she was the Chair of Family Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and before that, the Vice President for Minority Affairs at the same institution as part of her 22-year career as a US Army Medical Corps officer. She will serve on the program faculty leadership committee, and develop programming, develop and teach training modules. She has received several teaching awards, has led the leadership task force for the Council of Academic Family Medicine, and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2011. She is also a member of the Gold Humanism Society and AOA.
