Message from the CTSI Director

Steve Reis, MD

Director, Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Following our successful renewal of the Clinical and Translational Science Award, initially received in 2006 to establish the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at the University of Pittsburgh, the CTSI continues to serve as the academic home to integrate clinical and translational sciences across the University, UPMC, and the region. One focus of the CTSI is to develop, nurture, and support cadres of clinical and translational scientists by building on the University’s existing clinical research training programs, supporting new comprehensive training programs, and providing resources and opportunities that will facilitate the translation of research findings from the bench to the bedside, and on into the community.

One of the central elements of the CTSI is the Research Education and Career Development Core, housed in the ICRE. The ICRE has a plethora of translational science education and training opportunities that span the entire academic pipeline of investigators from medical and health science students to senior faculty investigators. ICRE faculty members are assuming leadership roles in the national Clinical and Translational Science Award community, spearheading new initiatives, and leading the definition of the academic field of clinical and translational research.

As a well-established national leader in clinical and translational research training, the ICRE goes from strength to strength. I look forward to the growth in clinical and translational research expertise that is occurring within our research community as a result of the ICRE’s excellent training program.
