The CTSI’s Pitt Mobile Science Laboratory, a 70-foot tractor trailer equipped with 26 work stations, offers hands-on science educational programs to students in grades 3 through 12. Students participate in authentic laboratory investigations that illustrate the scientific method and its applications while using innovative techniques in a state-of-the-art laboratory. The curriculum includes investigations involving human genetics, developmental biology, pathology, dental forensics, and the impact of exercise on improving human health. Students gain experience performing gel electrophoresis and using light microscopes and stereoscopes during their investigations. The mobile lab has traveled throughout western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, reaching more than 4,000 students during the past 2 years.

The Pitt Mobile Science Laboratory is available to school students in conjunction with their science classroom curricula. It is also available to educate the public during community events.
