Spotlight on Hyagriv Simhan, MD, MS

Hyagriv Simhan, MD, MS, was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award at this year's Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) commencement ceremony.

Dr. Simhan received his medical degree from Boston University and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania. He then undertook fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine and in reproductive infectious diseases and immunology at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was awarded an MS in clinical research. He is currently an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also serves as the chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the medical director of obstetrical services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

An experienced clinical and translational researcher in the field of perinatal medicine, Dr. Simhan focuses on preterm birth. He was a member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Understanding Premature Birth and Assuring Healthy Outcomes, and he was a coauthor of the committee's report entitled Preterm Birth: Causes, Consequences, and Prevention. In addition to leading clinical and translational science studies in Pittsburgh, he has participated collaboratively in protocol development, project design, study enrollment, data analysis, and publication of multicenter studies on the genetics of preterm birth.

Dr. Simhan is the principal investigator of the Nullipara Network sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and is co–principal investigator of the NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network at Magee-Womens Hospital. He is active in establishing and implementing efforts designed to foster patient safety and increase health care quality for obstetrical patients, including obstetrical crisis medical emergency teams and labor induction process improvements. These efforts have been acknowledged through receipt of the Fine Award for Health Care Quality Improvement from the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and receipt of the Achievement Award for Health Care Quality Improvement/Patient Safety from the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.
