PhD in CTS Alum Receives a Beeson Career Development Award

Zachary Marcum, PharmD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, recently received a Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging (K76) from the National Institute of Aging. In this 3-year study, Dr. Marcum will examine the association between long-term antihypertensive use and brain health, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Dr. Marcum completed the PhD in Clinical and Translational Science Program in 2014 and his dissertation research focused on medication use and falls in older adults. He became a faculty member in the UW Department of Pharmacy the following year, and is currently also the Assistant Director for Research of UW’s Plein Center for Geriatric Pharmacy Research, Education and Outreach. He is an investigator on federally funded research grants and is author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Marcum’s newly funded project could help guide the treatment of hypertension, which affects millions of Americans, in order to maximize brain health.

Congratulations to Dr. Marcum!
