PhD in CTS Student Wins Excellence in Global Surgery Research Award

Current PhD in Clinical and Translational Science student Alejandro Munoz-Valencia, MD, won an award for his research at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons, held in San Francisco in October 2019. Dr. Munoz-Valencia was specifically recognized for excellence in research in the global surgery and humanitarian outreach category.

Dr. Munoz-Valencia has been conducting research under the mentorship of Juan C. Puyana, MD, and fellow PhD in CTS student Francisco Bonilla Escobar, MD, MSc, at the Global Surgery Group of the University of Pittsburgh. His research has focused on the availability of blood units and the subsequent impact on trauma patients’ outcomes, as well as the geographical distribution of blood banks within trauma systems. His abstract at the ACS Clinical Congress was titled, “Effect of Blood Banks Availability on Mortality Due to Shock after Trauma in a Middle-Income Country.” After he finishes his doctoral degree, Dr. Munoz-Valencia aspires to pursue general surgery residency and further training in trauma surgery.
