Mentoring

Mentor junior faculty members, fellows, and residents

Each year, there are more than 200 students in the various degree and career development programs offered by the ICRE. Students and trainees often include medical students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, medical fellows, and junior faculty members seeking a career in patient-oriented research. All students and trainees require mentors from different disciplines to form a mentoring team for their clinical or translational research projects.

Mentor students in an independent study, in research for the master's degree, or in a clinical trials practicum

Our degree students often require mentoring for an independent study, thesis research, or practicum. These students usually do not require financial support from mentors, because they are part of other programs that support their efforts and tuition.

Serve on an advisory committee for a KL2, CEED, or TL1 program

K24 scholars have the opportunity to serve on advisory boards for a range of programs offered by the ICRE. By doing so, they are able to contribute to the general direction of these programs and learn program development through interaction with senior faculty on the advisory boards. This experience is intended to enhance their awareness of common career challenges and ultimately help them in their mentoring skills.

Participate in mentoring training

The ICRE offers a 1-credit mentoring course entitled Making the Most of Mentoring (CLRES 2170). The course lasts for eight 2-hour sessions and covers the roles of a mentor and a mentee; improving communication between mentor and mentee; the use of mentor-mentee contracts; negotiation between mentor and mentee; providing and accepting feedback; understanding issues related to mentoring minorities and women; and the use of tools to evaluate the mentoring relationship. K24 recipients who enroll in this class with their mentees will enhance their mentoring skills while simultaneously solidifying expectations and a strong working relationship with their mentees.

Participate in the Academy of Mentoring

To facilitate the matching of mentors and mentees, the ICRE is developing an Academy of Mentoring. Individuals with mentoring experience and a desire to enhance the careers of junior investigators are invited to join. They will be included in a database that will be searchable by new students and faculty with respect to a number of variables, including discipline, race, ethnicity, sex, and mentoring experience. Mentors benefit by being able to establish more mentoring relationships by making their backgrounds and interests readily available to potential mentees.
