Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Program

Financial Information

General information

Financing for the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Program is shared by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. On a case-by-case basis, students may be co-funded by the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Program and an institutional training grant to the University of Pittsburgh (e.g., T32).

Stipend

The fellowship provides students with a 12-month stipend.

The fellowship is paid as a monthly stipend and is subject to federal but not state tax. Although no taxes are withheld, fellows are expected to file quarterly estimated taxes.

The interpretation and implementation of tax laws is the domain of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the courts. For further information, contact the IRS or a tax professional.

Tuition, Health Insurance, and Research-Related Expenses

The fellowship covers the cost of tuition for the core courses in Clinical Research. It also covers health insurance and support for student fees and other program costs.

Reimbursement for Travel and Business Expenses

The fellowship reimburses students for travel and business expenses that have been preapproved by the program co-leader and that comply with applicable University policies. Fellows are encouraged to present the results of their clinical research studies at scientific conferences and professional meetings nationally.

Scholarship Toward the Fourth Year of Medical School

University of Pittsburgh medical students who complete the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at Pitt are eligible for a Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP) scholarship to reduce medical school indebtedness by covering part of the cost of their fourth year of medical school.
