Application Procedure

There is a two-step process for applying for the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Please note that all application materials can be sent via e-mail. If you are accepted into the Univeristy of Pittsburgh's Doris Duke program, you will be required to send your official transcripts by mail.

For applicants enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

  1. Complete a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Application. Items for this application include the following:
    • Completion of the online common application form.
    • A letter of support from Dean Levine or Dean Harvey.
    • Two letters of support from faculty who can comment on your academic performance and potential for clinical research.
    • A personal statement.
    • Your curriculum vitae.
    • A copy of your medical school transcript.
  2. Complete the University of Pittsburgh Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Application for Internal Applicants. Applications are due by January 12th, 2012. Items for this application include the following:
    • Identification of a clinical research mentor from the University of Pittsburgh. You are required to have an established, working relationship with this mentor through either your summer research project or scholarly project.
    • A letter of support from your mentor (can be one of the two required letters for the Doris Duke common application).
    • A 2-page research proposal.

For applicants enrolled at other medical schools

  1. Complete a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Application. Items for this application include the following:
    • Completion of the online common application form.
    • A letter of support from the dean's office of the medical school in which you are currently matriculated.
    • Two letters of support from faculty who can comment on your academic performance and potential for clinical research.
    • A personal statement.
    • Your curriculum vitae.
    • A copy of your medical school transcript.
  2. Complete the University of Pittsburgh Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Application for External Applicants. Applications are due by January 12th, 2012. Items for this application include the following:
    • Names of at least 2–5 federally funded University of Pittsburgh clinical researchers and a brief explanation (2–3 sentences) of their research that interests you.

      Note: If you are interested in mental health, integration of mental health sciences in general medical care or family medicine, neuroscience, neurosurgical, pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions for neuropsychiatric disorders, neuroradiology, neuropathology, research on mind-body interface, and topics in related behavioral and biomedical sciences, you may be eligible for co-funding by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health for research at the University of Pittsburgh.
  3. For international students currently holding a visa, please complete the International Graduate Student Supplemental Form.

All University of Pittsburgh material should be submitted to the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) by January 12th, 2012.

Dates and Deadlines

January 12, 2012Applications due to the University of Pittsburgh.
March 2012Notification of award.
April 2012Outstanding offers must be accepted or declined, and acceptances become binding.
July 2012Program begins.
