Research Training and Career Development

The Institute's training and career development programs are customized to meet the needs of every stage of the "career pipeline." The listing below describes each program that we offer for students and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh.

Clinical Research Scholars Program (CRSP)
  • For junior faculty
  • This highly competitive program offers 75% salary support for 2 years to provide protected time for the conduct of preliminary research for a career development award. Scholars are expected to apply for a K award or another career development award in the first year.
Career Education and Enhancement for Health Care Research Diversity (CEED)
  • For post-doctoral fellows and faculty from under-represented minority groups
  • The goal of CEED is help trainees successfully compete for early career development awards (such as KO8, K12, K23, K25, VA, and other awards) with intensive training in grant writing, preparation of publications, mentoring, and development of leadership and management skills.
Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP) for Residents
  • For University of Pittsburgh residents
  • Residents in this unique program pursue mentored research and a clinical research seminar throughout their clinical training. In addition, they devote 2 months to completing the core curriculum in Clinical Research following their intern year.
International Scholars Program for Residents
  • For international University of Pittsburgh residents
  • Residents in this unique program pursue mentored research and a clinical research seminar throughout their clinical training. In addition, they devote 2 months to completing the core curriculum in Clinical Research following their intern year.
Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP) for Medical Students
  • For medical students
  • This highly competitive program offers full and partial tuition scholarships for a 5-year joint MD/MS or Certificate in clinical research in which formal coursework is augmented by seminars and mentored research.
Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship Program
  • For University of Pittsburgh medical students and medical students from other U.S. medical schools
  • This nationally-recognized program, funded jointly by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine, offers a $27,000 stipend and tuition for the Certificate in clinical research to students conducting mentored clinical research at the University of Pittsburgh between the 3rd and 4th year of medical school.
Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Clinical and Translational Research
  • For doctoral students who have passed their respective qualifying exams
  • MD/PhD students who wish to pursue a PhD in clinical and translational science and have completed at least 2 years of medical school.
  • Medical students who have completed at least 3 years of medical school and who want to spend 1 year (between MS III and MS IV) completing a Master's degree or a certificate in clinical and translational science. (CSTP students are eligible to apply).
  • This fellowship provides stipend and partial tuition support for one year of multidisciplinary clinical and translational research.
Short-Term Access to Research Training Program (STARTUP)
  • For pre-doctoral students enrolled in a clinical professional program
  • STARTUP provides mentor-matching and stipend for an 8-12 week summer immersion experience in mentored clinical and translational research.
