CLRES 2073: An Orientation to Mentored Clinical Research: Medical Student Introductory Seminar
The CLRES 2073: An Orientation to Mentored Clinical Research: Medical Student Introductory Seminar is a mandatory monthly seminar series for first-year students in the CSTP. The purpose of the seminar is to provide clinical research career perspectives and to introduce students to some fundamental concepts, ranging from how to develop a research question to the ethics and regulation of human subjects research. Attendance at 100% of seminars is expected. Students who fall below two-thirds attendance (66.7%) will lose their CSTP scholarship.* The seminars are held on Fridays from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
In addition to these seminars, each CSTP student must complete four self-directed learning modules for human subjects research certification no later than February of the first year of program participation. The learning modules are available here and include (1) Research Integrity, (2) either Human Subjects Research in Biomedical Science or Human Subjects Research in Social and Behavioral Sciences, (3) Conflict of Interest (under the "Responsible Conduct of Research" folder), and (4) HIPAA Researcher Privacy Requirements (under the "HIPAA" folder). You are responsible for uploading copies of your certificates to your CSTP Zone site. If you have any questions or need further instruction, please contact Jennifer Kush.

*The two-thirds attendance requirement is a minimum to protect students' good standing in the program. However, students generally attend nearly 100% of the seminars. Students may miss seminars for any reason, including illness, and no "excused" absences are offered. That is, up to one-third of absences are "excused" in advance. If an illness or disability requires a student to miss more than one-third of the seminars, the student should refer to the University of Pittsburgh disability policy for information.
**During CLRES 2073, the institutional review board (IRB) practicum includes an orientation to the IRB. Outside of the seminar, each student is required to complete an additional 6 hours of work that includes reviewing a research protocol and attending the IRB meeting at which the student's own reviewed protocol is discussed.
