INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Introduction to Clinical and Translational Research Seminar (CLRES 2073) is a mandatory monthly seminar series for first year participants in the CSTP. The purpose of the seminar is to provide clinical research career perspectives and to introduce trainees to some fundamental concepts, ranging from how to develop a research question to the ethics and regulation of human subjects research. Attendance at 100% of seminars is expected; students who fall below two-thirds attendance (66.7%) will lose their CSTP scholarship.* Seminars in the fall and spring semesters are on Fridays from 12:30 - 2:00pm. In the summer, seminars are held on Tuesdays from 12:00 - 1:30pm.
In addition to these seminars, each first year trainee must complete 4 self-directed learning modules for human subjects research certification no later than February of the first year of program participation. The learning modules are available here and include(1) Research Integrity, (2) Human Subjects Research in Biomedical Science OR Human Subjects Research in Social and Behavioral Sciences, (3) Conflict of Interest (under the" Responsible Conduct of Research" folder), and (4) HIPAA Researchers Privacy Requirements (under the "HIPAA folder"). You are responsible for uploading copies of your certificates to your CSTP Zone site. If you have any questions or need further instruction, please contact Jennifer Kush.

* The two-thirds attendance requirement is a minimum to protect students' good standing in the program. However, students generally attend nearly 100% of seminars. Students may miss seminars for any reason, including illness, and no "excused" absences are offered. That is, up to one-third of absences are "excused" in advance. If an illness or disability require absences in excess of one-third of seminars, please refer to the University of Pittsburgh disability policy for information.
** The IRB practicum includes an orientation to the IRB during CLRES 2073. An additional 6 hours of work outside of seminar are required: students review a research protocol and attend the IRB meeting at which your reviewed protocol is discussed.
