Instructions for Preparing the Draft Budget

The budget must be provided in the format shown here and must include the following information for each year of planned participation in the CRSP:

  • The applicant's salary (anticipate a 3% increase for outgoing years), the percentage of effort allocated to the program, the fringe benefits associated with this effort, and the dollars requested. The amount of dollars requested should not exceed 75% of the annual salary. Please be certain to use the correct rate to calculate the fringe benefit, since the rate varies for medical faculty (20.9%), nonmedical faculty (29.6%), and staff (29.7%).
  • Funds requested for tuition and fees.
  • Funds requested for books.
  • Funds requested to travel to the annual NIH meeting.
  • Funds requested to travel to a training or scientific meeting (total travel amount not to exceed $1,500).
  • Funds of up to $25,000 per year to carry out a research project. The budget should delineate, in detail, the planned use of the research funds. Funds may be requested for:
    • Research expenses, such as supplies and personnel.
    • Statistical and data management services.
    • Other project infrastructure, including relevant datasets.
