Application Process

Interested candidates should obtain a formal application (see the link below). The application must include:

  1. Online Application Form
  2. A one page Personal Statement of your research interests and how the program will benefit your health care research career.
  3. One page career plan stating how the program will enable you to write and submit a career development proposal (i.e., K-award).
  4. A Curriculum Vitae
  5. Letters of Support:
    • One letter from Department Head, Division Chief, Program Director outlining commitment to candidate (i.e., guaranteeing protected time of 50% or more to participate in the program)
    • One from primary Mentor (stating that the Mentor is willing to meet with Trainee for 1 hour weekly and attend monthly meetings sponsored by the program)

Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must hold an advanced degree (MD, PhD, DDS, etc) from underrepresented minority backgrounds (African-American, Hispanic or American Indian) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application deadline; have excelled in their education; are now ready to start a career in health science research; are prepared to devote 9 consecutive months to research training; are committed to pursuing academic health sciences careers; In order to pursue the focused research training required by this program, applicants must identify faculty mentors with whom a research career development plan will be developed. The mentor's experience in the supervision of trainees and the adequacy of the mentor's research environment and support will be strongly considered.

Selection Process:

A program committee will conduct an initial review and screening process. Candidates determined to be of high quality with high interest and potential for a career in health sciences research will be selected. Materials submitted in support of an application will not be released for other purposes and cannot be returned to the applicant. The minimum requirements of participant selection will be the following:

  • Candidates who are U.S. Citizens, non-citizen nationals, or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Members of under represented minorities (African-American, Native American, and targeted groups of Hispanics).
  • Candidates who have completed an advanced degree in health sciences (MD, DDS, PhD, etc) who are junior faculty, clinical Fellows or Post-doctoral fellows.
  • Candidates who possess a high level of interest and potential for the pursuit of health sciences research as a major focus of career plan.

Along with the candidate's individual qualifications, preference will be given to the following:

  • Candidates with departments that have the availability of staff, research support, and facilities to create a high quality environment for the submission of career development application by the candidate.
  • Candidates with departments or program directors assuring that the candidate will be able to engage in 50% or more protected time during the 9 months of training provided by this program.

Timeline for Application and Selection Process:

2008 Timetable
June 2, 2008, 4pm EST: Deadline for receipt of completed applications.
June 30, 2008: Official notification of Trainees
September 1, 2008: Official Start Date of Training Program

How to Submit:

Applicants should submit one original hard copy version and 10 collated hard copies. For the collated hard copy versions, fasten each copy with one rubber band or one binder clip.

All materials will be accepted until 4:00 PM on the due date (June 2, 2008). Send one (1) original, 10 collated copies to:
